Advice from the Folks at World Backup Day: Don’t Be an April Fool

The founders of World Backup Day chose the date March 31 to drive home the message that you should backup your devices before it’s too late–and then you become the April fool.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

How many times have you told yourself, “I’ve got to back up my device before I lose all of these photos?” But, you procrastinated, and here you are with a year’s worth of photos and videos stored only on your phone and all of your important documents accessible solely on your laptop.

Well, here’s your chance to set aside an hour or two and backup your devices. Today, March 31, is World Backup Day.

A backup means making a second copy of all your important files—photos, documents, and those priceless videos of your children or other loved ones. A backup can help you retain a copy of your files in the event that your phone is lost or stolen, your computer gets a virus, you become a victim of ransomware, or you accidentally delete a file.

There are several methods–and a myriad of available services–for backing up your devices. You could use an external storage device, such as an external hard drive or USB drive, or a cloud or online backup.

Lifewire recommends an online backup service as the most economical and effective backup method because it provides an entirely separate location to store your files. If, for example, your laptop was stolen along with your external hard drive, then you would be right back where you started–without a backup copy of your photos, videos, and documents.
